In a thrilling Week 10 matchup, the Fort Payne Wildcats secured a memorable victory over the undefeated Cherokee County Warriors, who were ranked No. 2 in class 4A. The Wildcats’ outstanding performance, led by head coach Chris Elmore, has earned him the prestigious title of CM Gridiron Coach of the Week.
Coach Elmore, now in his sixth season leading the Fort Payne program, has consistently demonstrated his leadership skills and ability to guide the Cats to success on the gridiron. Under his guidance, the Wildcats have achieved an impressive 43-23 record, including two region titles, five playoff appearances, and a remarkable 26-6 record in region play.
Closing out the 2023 regular season with a commendable 6-4 record, the Wildcats have claimed the No. 2 seed in Class 6A, Region 8.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats will host the formidable Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils in the first round of the AHSAA Class 6A playoffs. With an 8-2 record, the Blue Devils will undoubtedly present a challenge for the Wildcats.
Before taking the reigns of the Fort Payne football program in 2018, Coach Elmore spent five seasons leading the Chelsea Hornets. During his tenure, he led the 6A Hornets to a 27-25 record and secured two playoff berths. This experience, combined with his exceptional track record, has earned Coach Elmore a career head coaching record of 70-48 over 11 seasons.
Notably, Coach Elmore’s connection to the Wildcats runs deep, as he is a graduate of Fort Payne High School. Playing under his father, former Wildcats head coach Jerry Elmore, he developed a deep understanding and passion for the game of football from an early age. This familial connection has undoubtedly shaped Coach Elmore’s coaching philosophy and dedication to the Fort Payne Wildcats.
As CM Gridiron’s Coach of the Week, Coach Elmore’s accomplishments and dedication to his team have been recognized on a statewide level. The Fort Payne community, along with Wildcats fans, eagerly anticipates the upcoming playoff game against Mortimer Jordan, where Coach Elmore’s leadership and strategy will be on full display.

He comes from a great family of coaches. His grandfather, Ferman Elmore was a great coach at Athens and Dothan. My Dad and Uncle Kent played with Uncle Ferman At Pickens Co. High in Reform. At my Dad’s funeral, my Uncle Kent told Jerry, “Your Dad was the hardest tackler I ever faced!”
