In an impressive display of strategy and leadership, Appalachian Eagles’ head football coach Neal Whittington has been named CM Gridiron’s Coach of the Week for week 8 of the Alabama high school football season. The accolade follows the Eagles’ commanding 42-0 shutout victory over the Woodville Panthers.
The triumph over Woodville marked a significant milestone for the Eagles, earning their 7th victory secures their most successful season since 2010 while improving their record to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in Class 1A, Region 8 play. The win also locks up the No. 2 spot in the region standings, guaranteeing the Eagles home-field advantage in the first round of the AHSAA postseason.
Under Whittington’s guidance, the Appalachian Eagles have been dominant throughout the season, scoring a total of 290 points while conceding only 158. The team’s defense has been particularly formidable, limiting six of their nine opponents to two scores or less.
Now in his fourth season at Appalachian, Whittington has steadily built a competitive program. With an overall record of 17-22, he has successfully led the Eagles to the postseason twice during his tenure.
Looking ahead, Whittington and the Eagles will conclude the regular season this Friday night at James E. Carr Stadium against the Valley Head Tigers. Following this matchup, they will enjoy a bye week before stepping into the Class 1A playoffs.
